Pongal to tamil is what durga puja is to Bengal,Baisakhi to Punjab ,Bihu to Assam, Ugadi to Andhra, Makar sankranti to Maharashtra , Onam to Kerala and so on.
It is known by different names and celebrated with different customs in different parts of the region. Sometimes, different festivals coincide on the same day such as Thai Pongal and Makar Sankranti. It basically heralds the hope of a new era of prosperity signifying the end of the harvest season , thereby expressing their gratitude to mother nature.
Being a Tamilian brought up in Mumbai , I have grown up celebrating and enjoying both Pongal and Makar sankranti. I Hope you enjoy the looks i created both being total contrast to each other.
For Pongal i went for a Traditional look keeping it simple ,elegant and something which is wearable for the pongal rituals.I chose this saree because i dint want to wear a bright typical South Indian saree and as the rituals are performed in the morning I wanted to wear something which is light weight ,comfortable and the colour is so fresh , pretty and pleasing for the eyes making it apt for the festive season.I paired it up with a choker , long jasmine chain , a bangle and a maroon clutch to sum it up. You can definitely amp up your look by braiding your hair and don’t forget the gajra like i did :p

For Makar Sankranti I wanted to incorporate Black colour in my outfit as Maharshtrians wear black on that day reason being Sankranti comes at the peak of the winter season and black colour retains and absorbs heat, helping keep warm . Another reason is that Makara Sankramana swaroopa or the personified deity associated with Makar is black in colour. I wanted to experiment with this look so i chose to go for a boho ethnic look which has a black sequins spaghetti with a golden palazzo and layered it up it up a black flowy cape. For accessories i wore a layered neck piece, a handcuff and a golden chain belt to add that extra bling to the outfit. The best thing about this outfit is that its so versatile and you can easily amp up your look from morning pooja to a late night dinner!
